Children with Special Needs / Music Therapy
Music is a proven means to providing emotional comfort and relief in ways which can be adapted to meet the needs of individual children. Exposure to various styles of music, sounds, rhythm and song provides a therapeutic environment and allows children to explore different cognitive modalities. MUSICWORKS--duos and trios comprised of a rotating cast of professional performers and teachers--encourages creativity, helps increase a child’s confidence, focus, leadership and learning through playing instruments, singing, and improvisation. Our work includes residencies including:

              • Extreme Kids and Crew (a sensory gym dedicated to serving all populations of downtown Brooklyn with affordable programs on a sliding pay scale)
              • Manhattan JCC's Camp Kulam (summer workshop including field trips and a significant staff:student ratio)
              • 14th Street Y (weekly arts and movement sessions for families across the tri-state area)
              • Friendship Circle (fostering mentorships between teenage volunteers and special needs kids)

              "I think Jordan
has never been happier in his life than performing in yesterday's concert.
Thank you for giving him that unforgettable experience."
              Linda Carr, parent, NYC

"Your assembly was wonderful! --a girl in my class turned to me at the end and said, "Wasn't that great?!  I hope it's not over...' "Dinah Herrity, teacher, Claremont School

"Your students’ presentation was phenomenal! The fact that students had been talking about it and really took ownership is a great compliment
               to you all!"
              -Curriculum Developer, Kent Place School
"Musicworks was enthusiastic, extremely professional, and presented a program which artfully incorporated the 'pillars of character' which our school consistently focuses upon.  The performers quickly engaged the students with fantastic music and humor, including over a dozen kids who were involved directly onstage. Several of the classroom teachers later remarked to me how the buzz from the morning’s performance had sparked classroom discussions."
-Erik Van Gunten, dean, PS 83
